Scholarship Information

Dear Student:

The Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association is currently accepting applications for the David J. Seruga Memorial Scholarship.  The scholarship is available to currently enrolled undergraduate students at WVU.  The scholarship will be a one-time award of $1500 for the 2008-2009 school year, and will be awarded prior to the Fall 2008 semester. 

To be eligible, a student must be:

  1. A resident of Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Washington or Westmoreland Counties.
  2. Registered as a full time student (12 or more credit hours/semester) at West Virginia University for the previous school year.
  3. Previously completed a minimum of twenty-four (24) credits at WVU, maintaining a grade point average of 2.5 or better.

Interested applicants should complete a scholarship application, attaching both a copy of their most recent WVU transcript, and the essay indicated on the application form.  Applicants will be evaluated and selected by the Chapter based on their academic performance and their contribution to WVU and their and community.

Since 1997, the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter has awarded over $20,000 in scholarship money to WVU students from our area.  We are excited to continue this program by offering these academic scholarships for the 2006-2007 school year.

Scholarship Policies and Rules

Eligibility

  1. Applicants must have resided in one of the following Pennsylvania counties for at least one calendar year prior to attending West Virginia University (University):  Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Washington or Westmoreland.
  2. Applicants must be registered as a full time undergraduate student enrolled in twelve or more credit hours at West Virginia University for the upcoming semester.

Selection

  1. Scholarship recipients will be chosen by no less than three (3) current members of the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association (Chapter).
  2. Prior to the start of each school year, the Chapter will determine the scholarship amount, number, and type of scholarships available for the coming school year.  The Chapter may choose to award scholarships to both incoming freshmen and undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University.
  3. All applicants must provide and will be selected based on the following:
    1. A completed scholarship application.
    2. Copy of the applicant’s most recent academic transcript (high school or college).
    3. An essay, the subject of which shall be determined by the scholarship committee.
  1. At a minimum, existing WVU students will be required to maintain full-time status and, during the previous two semesters, complete a minimum of twenty-four (24) credits at the University and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 or better.

Award

  1. Each recipient will receive the established scholarship amount for the school year, to be credited by the West Virginia University Foundation to their student account.  The schedule for the credit(s) will be determined by the chapter prior to each scholarship award.
  2. The scholarship amount is a one-time award for a single school year.  Recipients are permitted to reapply each year for additional scholarship awards with a maximum total award of $4,000.
  3. Each recipient will provide a recent photograph to the Chapter.  By signing the application, the recipient grants permission to the Chapter and the WVU Foundation to use it for the purposes of promoting the scholarship.
  4. All rules set forth in this document are subject to change as determined by the Board of Directors of the Chapter.  It is the right of the Chapter to discontinue the scholarship program or any individual scholarships at any time or change the structure of the program.
